Honoring the Fathers of Bluegrass - Tribute to 1946 and 1947 (Skaggs Family): B
Year Zero for modern bluegrass was 1945, when Bill Monroe added a couple of hayseed virtuosos named Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs to his band and began creating the fiery, improvisation-driven string music we take for granted today. But not all-world bluegrass player Ricky Skaggs who reminds us of that crucial moment with an album featuring reverent versions of tunes made popular by Monroe’s band. Nothing can duplicate the shock and awe of hearing those original cuts for the first time, but Skaggs & Co. acknowledge a huge debt with ‘Honoring” - and make the past come alive via a Scruggs guest turn on “Goin’ Back to Old Kentucky.” Download: “Bluegrass Breakdown.”
